Charging Ahead

Innovation and scale. The two buzzwords that come up when discussing anything new, or indeed old on the market. How is something different? And if it is, does that disruption enable you to scale it?

Innovation and scale. The two buzzwords that come up when discussing anything new, or indeed old on the market. How is something different? And if it is, does that disruption enable you to scale it?

Combining these two brings its own unique challenges. How to create a product or service that is new or unique, and how to implement these changes without causing so much disruption in infrastructure and systems that scaling becomes an impossibility. The ability to innovate at scale relies on the creation of a desirable product or service that can be added seamlessly with little or hassle for the user.

The use of parcel tracking products certainly does one of these by innovating and allowing a live look on the location and condition of a parcel. But can the current products on the market do this at scale without hassle for the user in disrupting infrastructure and systems already in place? Currently, no. What happens to the device when the parcel arrives? How does the user charge it? What if it breaks? Where is it stored? How to handle the expense of purchasing these devices? How to handle the logistics of the 1000’s of devices needed in shipments?

The key to creating scale in this space is to remove this pain, by offering the same live tracking service while taking away all of the unmanageable hassle.

The two trays that make up the Parcelive DMS system

By offering live parcel tracking as a service Parcelive is essentially renting devices which are received by the user in time for their shipments to go out. Once the shipment is on its way there is no more physical contact betweenParcelive users and their device as all of the return logistics, charging and maintenance are handled by one of our Device Management Systems (DMS). The DMS is like a home base for Parcelive devices, where they return to after each tracking journey to be charged, undergo firmware upgrades and receive sensor calibration. This return and re-use enables Parcelive to be offered not only at a low price point but also at scale, as each DMS system is ably to process up to 2,300 trackers per hour.

So how does it work? Devices are placed into a top or ‘device tray’. Each device tray is paired with a bottom or ‘charging tray’ that flows through the DMS readying the devices for re-use. Used Parcelive devices are placed into the device tray on one side of the DMS and come out of the other side ready to go on their next tracking journey.

By handling this pain for the user Parcelive enables companies to reap all of the benefits of live tracking their entire distribution network at scale, without having to worry about any of the logistics of their devices. Having a live look on each of their shipments enables these users to see direct benefits to customer service, dispute resolutions and optimisation across their network. Innovation and scale. Together.
