Internet of things and the changing landscape of the logistics industry

Like it or not the Internet of Things is coming, and coming fast. But what is the Internet of Things, and what does it mean for us? According to Tech Target “The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital machines, objects, animals or people that are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.”

This means that everything around us is becoming connected, allowing us to make smarter and better-informed decisions on everything from clothes to heating our homes and logistics. Gartner estimates that in 2016 there will be over 6 billion connected devices in the world, up by 30% on the previous year.

While IoT is not is the power to stop bad things around us from happening, it allows us to respond in effective and efficient ways to minimise risks and allow us to make better informed decisions in the future. For example the alignment of weather systems with traffic patterns and emergency services could allow for a quicker and much more effective evacuation of a city in a hurricane situation.

This is what Parcelive is bringing to the logistics industry. A revolutionary internet of things product with true real-time insight into shipments across an entire network. Having a live look on not just one shipment, but all of your shipments allows for dramatic increases in customer service, dispute resolution and the optimisation across networks at a global scale. Where in the supply chain are parcels being dropped? Where are they going missing? Currently, we have no hard data on this. ParceLive delivers truth at scale by giving us access to this data creating complete efficiency in how we move our items across the globe.
