What do you buy online? Groceries? Clothes? The boom in online shopping, aided by investment from delivery companies, is no secret. Buying things online is quicker, easier and unlike traditional shops the internet is open twenty four hours a day with many e-commerce sites offering next day delivery. The introduction of smart phones and tablets has only added weight to this movement as we are now able to purchase items on the go with just a few taps on a screen. Indeed 2016 was a landmark year for mobile commerce as it marked the first time that mobile sales surpassed those made via computers.

A study by statista.com showed that in the first quarter of 2016 in the United States the average order value online was $75. Proving the notion that we are using the internet to order convenient and less valuable items, while sticking to traditional ‘brick and mortar’ stores for more expensive items.

With the previously stated boom in mobile e-commerce we could now begin to see the shipping of more valuable items from phones and tablets while we sit on the train or lay on a beach. This is then followed by the ability to gain a live look on the location and condition of the order from that same device no matter where you or your parcel are. Should the order fall off a shelf in the back of the van it’s being transported in, the receiver will be the first to know. Similarly if the order is opened at any point in the supply chain the user will be immediately alerted to the time and location of the breach.
